Daily Prayer - Temptations

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

It is easy (for me at least) to convince myself that Jesus did not really have any trouble dealing with temptation - after all, He is God!  But this morning as I was listening to an audio version of Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis I was struck by this quote:
No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because he was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means--the only complete realist.
Jesus is the only person to ever live who knows the full meaning of resisting temptation - because He never gave in to it.  I guess He really does know what it is like for me.  I find that very comforting.  How about you?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

O God, our Father, help us to resist the temptations which continually attack us.

Help us to resist the temptations which come from within and from our own natures:

     The temptation to laziness and to too much love of ease and comfort;

     The temptation to pride and self-conceit and to think of ourselves more highly than we ought;
The temptation to put things off until it is too late ever to do them, and to refuse to face the unpleasant things, until it is too late to do anything about them:
Help us to resist these, O God.

     The temptation to despair, and to lose heart and hope;

     The temptation to lower our standards and to accept things as they are;
The temptation to be resignedly content with life as it is and ourselves as we are:
Help us to resist these, O God.

     The temptation to let passion and desire have their way;

     The temptation to trade eternal happiness for the fleeting thrill of moodiness, to irritability, to bad temper;
The temptation to criticism, to fault-finding, to thinking the worst of others:
Help us to resist these, O God.

Help us to resist the temptations which come to us from outside.

Help us to say No to every voice which invites us to leave your way.

Help us to resist every seduction which makes sin more attractive.
Help us to walk through the world, and yet to keep our garments unspotted from the world.

Help us to be wise enough never to play with fire; never to flirt with temptation; never recklessly to put ourselves into a situation in which it is easy to go wrong; never unthinkingly to develop habits which provide an opportunity for sin.

Grant unto us that grace which will give us the strength and the purity ever to overcome evil and to do the right; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Daily Prayer - Help us be Watchmen

Good Tuesday morning, my friends.

So often the Word of God is denounced and ridiculed in our culture.  Yet we know from personal experience the beauty and truth it contains.  It is still completely relevant and life changing even today.  It needs to be proclaimed.  And we need to be the proclaimers (not to be confused with a Scottish band composed of identical twin brothers).

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

Father, it is through devout godly people that You repair, restore and rebuild lives as they raise up the unchanging, ever relevant ancient words of Scripture.

It takes faithful watchmen who serve with great vigilance, untiring in their ancient message of salvation to a world that is continuously desecrating that which was once sacred.

Father, help us to be watchmen for our families, co-workers, and friends as we carefully measure the present principles of this world by the eternal principles established in Scripture.

Grant us courage to speak out when the foundations are being shaken just as the watchmen were not silent night or day.

We do not stand in the gap alone but You, our Father, are with us and we stand in Your strength!

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Make me an alphabet of your peace

Good Friday morning, my friends.

My sister, Beth, shared this wonderful prayer/poem on Facebook (I guess there is a good use for it!).

Have a wonderful weekend my friends.

(If you ever want to be a "Guest Blogger" for this message, I would love to share a prayer you write or discover, and if you are so inclined please include your thoughts on said prayer.)

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

Help my words.

Sometimes black on page
Sometimes sound on stage –
Either way:Let them not
Hack bleeding gashes
Leaving faces in the ashes
And other bad lines of poetry.

Let them land like
Soft
Thuds
Of truth in supple minds
Breaking God-craving hearts with
Gentle sharp conviction.

Oh Jesus.
Help my words.

Let smug words be
Shushed
By the (gulp)
Of pride swallowed.

Let love words be
Loud
Like life and hope
Let laugh words dance
Light
Like cappuccino froth and candles

Make me an alphabet of your peace.

Oh Jesus.
Help my words.

Daily Prayer - Not sufficient

Good Wednesday morning, my friends.

I have found through experience that my own strength is not sufficient.  It is not sufficient to resist temptation.  It is not sufficient to keep me humble.  It is not sufficient to keep me regularly reading my Bible and praying.  It is not sufficient to make me the husband, father, friend, or worker that I need to be.  My strength is definitely not sufficient.

But I have also found that when I am struggling in one of these areas (or a myriad of others) if I turn to the Lord, and lean on Him, He gives me the strength.  And when I don't do that, the results are not pretty.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Is your strength sufficient?

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours,
Bruce

Lord Jesus, help me to remain faithful to You and your calling upon my life.

Strengthen and grow my faith as I daily search Your Scriptures and apply their truths to my spiritual walk.

As I go through the trials and experiences of my earthly journey would You fix my eyes and my ever-wandering heart upon Jesus.

When the howling winds and forceful storms of this life attempt to shipwreck my faith may they instead prove my faith to be more than sufficient to withstand the continual assaults from the enemy.

Because I take refuge in Jesus my spiritual foundation is firm, always dependable, and leads me to glorious victory.

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Share the hope

Good Tuesday morning, my friends.

I hope and pray you had a wonderful Victoria Day long weekend.  If it was anywhere near as hot where you are as it was here in Ottawa (30 degrees or so all 3 days) then I hope you were able to stay cool.  (I have a brand new A/C compressor in my car.  And by in my car I mean sitting in a box on the passenger seat waiting to be installed.  Timing is everything!)

Last Thursday I challenged you to take action - to do something to further the Kingdom of God in your sphere of influence.  My own effort (inviting men at my workplace to a Bible study) has been met with a deafening silence - no replys as of yet.  But I trust that God led me to that task for a reason and is either now working through the Holy Spirit to convince men to step up, or He is using that invitation in some way I cannot even fathom. (Please pray that His will would be accomplished here.)

So what about you?  Have you started something?  Are you planning something?  Did you simply delete my message?  Spend a few minutes in prayer today, now, asking God to give you courage to step out of the boat, or at least dip your big toe in the water.  Start simple.  Maybe get to know your neighbours. Begin a relationship that will allow you, at the right time, to share the hope you have within you.  Invite them to a BBQ?  Do something ...

"How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things" (Rom. 10:15). Is there any greater duty to be done for the kingdom? How beautiful it is. We must share the gospel. Without it, there is no forgiveness, no redemption, no salvation, no everlasting life. If God is truly for us, how can the world be against us? He gives us comfort in the face of affliction. His yoke is easy and burden is light when sufferings bear us down.

Take courage. Go share the gospel with the world.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

"Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel. For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough in Him to speak as I should"  (Eph 6:19-20)

Give me a caring heart, oh Lord, to love and seek the lost.

Overcome my fear and grant me courage to share my hope of salvation with those who have no hope.

Make me faithful in my daily life so that all I say and do may glorify you.

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Do something!

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

I want to challenge each and every one of you to do something this week, this day even, that advances the Kingdom of God.

Talk to that friend or family member about Jesus.  Start a Bible study and invite your neighours.  Volunteer to serve the poor with a faith-based organization that will allow you to share the Gospel.  What is that thing that God has been whispering in your ear?  Do it!  Step out of the boat!

And if you feel like it isn't the right time, that you aren't prepared, that you aren't adequate - GREAT!  Give all of the responsibility of making it happen to God.  And give Him all the credit when it does!
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. " Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.  (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)
This was in a devotional I read this morning:
"Do you want more wine? Then fill the jugs with water." "Do you want to get well? Get up!" "Are they hungry? Find them some food." "Do you want to see? Go wash in the pool." "Do you want to be resurrected? Come out of that tomb." (See John 5:6-8, 6:5-6, 9:1-7, 11:38-44.) Go do something! Get busy. Make the call. Write the check. Schedule the meeting. Do you believe? Act! (http://www.christianitytoday.com/moi/2012/003/may/17.17.html)
I am going to walk-the-walk on this one.  This morning I posted a notice on the bulletin board where I work, inviting men to join me for a Bible study based on the movie COURAGEOUS.  I have been in my current location since the first of April and have yet to connect with another Christian.  Please pray boldly that men will come forward.  And if you send me a note telling me what your plan is to advance the Kingdom this week, then I and the others here will pray for God to act with you and through you.

One final thought: Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for power equal to your tasks.—Phillips Brooks (bishop, hymn writer)

Where are you, men and women of courage??

Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
Bruce

Lord God,

you have called your servants
to ventures of which we cannot see the ending,
by paths as yet untrodden,
through perils unknown.

Give us faith to go out with good courage,
not knowing where we go,
but only that your hand is leading us
and your love supporting us;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Daily Prayer - Find rest for your soul

Good Wednesday morning, my friends.

Jesus said:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
I have to agree with a commentary I read on this last evening - this has to be one of the most beautiful passages in all of scripture.  Everytime I read it or ponder it I can actually feel my shoulders drop as tension leaves my body.

Being weary and burdened can result from being weighed down by rule-centric religious systems (as true now as it was for the Jews in Jesus time).

Being weary and burdened can result from being weighed down by sin and guilt.

Being weary and burdened can result from being weighed down by the strain of everyday life - finances, schedules, marriage, children, etc.

Any task can be a burden if it is something we have to do rather than something we want to do. As my relationship with Jesus develops and deepens I have discovered that taking on His yoke (obeying Him) becomes more what I want to do and therefore less of a burden.

What is weighing you down today?  What burden can you place at the feet of the Master?  Find rest for your soul.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

Dear Lord,

I need you now because I am full of stress and anxiety.
Reading your Word brings comfort, as I ask you to come and take my heavy burdens.

I take each burden, one by one, and lay them at your feet.
Please carry them for me so that I don't have to.

Replace them with your humble and gentle yoke so that I will find rest for my soul today.
I receive your gift of peace of mind and heart.

Thank you that I can lie down tonight in peace and sleep.
I know that you, Lord, will keep me safe.

I am not afraid because you are always with me.
Please keep me daily, Lord, in your perfect peace.

Amen

Daily Prayer - Humility

Good Tuesday morning, my friends.

In Matthew 5:5 Jesus says "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth".  At least that is what He says in the New International Version translation.  In The Message paraphrase it reads: "You're blessed when you're content with just who you are—no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought".

This speaks to be about one word: humility.  Focusing on who I really am (a forgiven sinner, but still a sinner none-the-less), and Who God is, helps to keep me humble. That word, humility, has come up several times in the past few days.  Maybe He is trying to tell me something?

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours!
Bruce

Father, I choose to heed the words of Scripture that caution us not to be a proud people or destruction will fall upon anything that I have built in my own strength for my self-glory.

I want my heart to be filled with godly gratitude instead of a prideful attitude so that it deflects that which is about me and reflects all that is about You.

In the same spirit as John I cry out, "Help me to decrease so that You will increase in my life."

More of Jesus, less of me, I pray.

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Shameless audacity!

Good Monday morning, my friends.

Do you ever pray with shameless audacity?  Do you think God would be offended by such prayers?  Apparently not!  In teaching his disciples how to pray, Jesus tells this story:
"Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;  a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.'  And suppose the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.'  I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." (Luke 11:5-10)

Did you catch that?  Jesus said the request was granted because of "shameless audacity".  When we boldly pray and expect God to act, it is not our reputation that is on the line, it is His!  God is the one Who promised that whatever we ask for in His name, He will grant.  Think of the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:1-40) where the prophet calls upon God to send fire to comsume the sacrifice on the alter.  God defends His own name by answering the prayer.

So when you ask, ask confidently. When you seek, seek diligently.  When you knock, knock boldy.  And the God who is determined to keep His name hallowed will act accordingly.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
Bruce

Father, please invigorate my prayer life with passion that does not quit.

Show me the needs before me and fill my heart with audacious persistent
until I press in for the salvation and deliverance of my family and friends.

In Jesus' name, amen.

Daily Prayer - Obey

Good Friday morning, my friends.

Yesterday I mentioned that Jesus asks us to do two things - believe and obey - and we talked about belief or faith.  What about obey?

I love the "Sermon on the Mount" in Matthew 5-7.  Jesus takes back "the Law" as corrupted by religious leaders over the years and brings them back to what was in God's heart when He gave them.  To me this is Jesus' declaration of His authority.  In fact, it ends with people being amazed "because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law" (Matthew 7:29).  He then goes on in the subsequent chapters to prove his authority through miracle after miracle.

But just before the end of the Sermon on the Mount there is a very familiar passage.  Jesus says:
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. (Matthew 7:24-17)
So this begs the question: are we wise or are we fools?  A wise man takes what he as heard and learned and puts it in to practice.  A fool hears the same words, thinks to himself "what a great sermon" and nothing changes in his life.  God does not keep track of how many Sundays we go to church or how many bible studies or "religious" events we attend.  He looks to see how these teachings are lived out in our lives.  He wants obedience.  All of the greatest Bible teachings in the world are useless to us unless it permeates every aspect of how we live.

Jesus said: "If you love me, keep my commands." (John 14:15)

So how you and I doing at loving Jesus?

Perhaps you will recognize this prayer as the words to a very familiar children's song.  Build your house on the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the wise man's house stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the foolish man's house went "splat!" [clap hands once]

So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
And the blessings will come down

Oh, the blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayer go up
So build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Daily Prayer -

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

Jesus calls us to do two basic things: Believe and Obey.  Today I would like to talk a little about "believing".

When He calls us to believe, He is really calling us to have faith or more specifically to trust in Him and His power.  Consider the story of Jesus and the centurion in Matthew 8:5-13:

The Faith of the Centurion

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly."

Jesus said to him, "Shall I come and heal him?"

The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, "Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that moment.

Do you know that this is the only place in the Bible where Jesus was amazed at someone else? There are lots of places where others were amazed with what Jesus said and did, but nowhere else where Jesus is the one who is astounded!

So what is it that amazes Jesus?  Well this centurion had 100 men under him who obeyed his every command.  Why? Was it because he was bigger than all of them? Stronger? Smarter?  No.  They obeyed him because of the power that the centurion represented - the power of Rome.  However, this man recognized that as powerful as Rome was (and it was the without doubt the strongest worldly power of the time), Rome could do nothing to save his servant.  But he had been watching Jesus and could see that not only did men obey Him, but diseases and demons as well!  He recognized that Jesus represented a power even greater than Rome.  He knew that Jesus had the power to heal his servant without even having met the servant.

That is the kind of faith that Jesus asks of us.

So how do we get that kind of faith?  I don't have it, at least not yet.  For me, though,  the key is the passage immediately before Jesus' encounter with the centurion.  In Matthew 8:1-4 Jesus comes upon a leper who says: "Master, if you want to, you can heal my body."  Jesus does want to and so heals the man.  I know that God can give me stronger faith.  So I pray "Master, if You want to You can give me the faith of the centurion."  And little by little He is answering that prayer.  I desperately pray that your faith is increasing as well.

Grace and peace and stronger faith be yours,
Bruce
Father God, you know our hearts,
though we are always besieged by the spirit of doubt;
please cure us of our unbelief,
so that our faith may grow,
and we may become closer to You.

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Conquerors

Good Tuesday morning, my friends.

Paul writes:
"In all this we are more than conquerors
because of him who has loved us.
For I am certain that
neither death nor life,
neither angels nor principalities,
neither the present nor the future, nor powers,
neither height nor depth nor any other creature,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord."   Romans 8:37-39

Do you feel like a conqueror?  If you are like me somedays you do, somedays you don't.  How about today?  When we look at Jesus with the correct perspective (and ourselves with the correct perspective) then we have no option but to feel like conquerors!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
Bruce

Jesus, you have made us conquerors.

You conquered sin and death.
We follow in your footsteps.
You have freed us from worry and fear.
We trust completely in you.

You are our hope.
You are all that we need.
We call out to you this day.
Set us free, O Lord.
Give us the confidence to drive sin from our lives.

Help us to stand up for the truth.
We are surrounded by darkness.
Yes, we will win in the end.
Give us the strength to do your will now.
We thank you for the gift of eternal life.
We thank you for your grace to live a holy life.

We are yours.
We belong to you.
Bring us home.
We love you, O Lord.
We give you praise, O Lord.
You are so wonderful.
How awesome you are!

We thank you for your blessings on us.
We thank you for new life this spring.
Bring us all back to life.
Heal our hurts.
Help us to forgive.
Give us your joy.
Renew us, O Lord.

We ask this of you, Jesus.
You supply our every need.
Thanks.

Amen.

Daily Prayer -

Good Friday morning, my friends.

The joy of the Lord is your strength!  That is what God says in Nehemiah 8:10.  Wow.  Imagine what it would feel like to see God's face light up when He sees you.  And it does - you bring Him Joy!  He created you for that reason. You no longer need to wonder what your purpose is - it is to give God joy!

If I could live with that thought in my mind every day, I would certainly have a great deal more strength to deal with life and to walk in faith.  I bet your could too.

Grace and peace and strength be yours in abundance,
Bruce

Father, I consider the words of Nehemiah who wrote, "The joy of the Lord is my strength" and Solomon who reminds us that "A cheerful heart is good medicine."

Both verses speak about matters of the heart where we store up Your love, joy and goodness.

Help us not to rely solely on external stimulus to bring forth a smile, but let our smiles be contagious as they are evidence of Your abundance within in our lives.

Help us to find a person today who has no smile so that we can pass ours onto her or him.

In the Name of Christ Jesus we pray.

Amen.
