Daily Prayer - Serenaded by God!

Good Friday morning, my friends.

I love to hear my daughter sing.  If I may brag a little, and I am going to, she has a beautiful singing voice.  She has honed her talent with years of singing lessons and choir.  Now if I love to listen to my daughter sing to me, how much more would I love to hear God sing to me?!

Which brings me to my daughter's favourite verse: Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD your God is with you,
   the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.
Pause for a minute and picture that scene - being serenaded by the God of heaven because he delights in you and loves you THAT much!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

Father, I pray that You would give me ears to hear Your love songs over me.

I pray that I would be able to silence the busyness of my life so I could hear Your soothing lullabies and Your bellowing melodies.

Thank You for being with me and for taking such great delight in my life that You rejoice over me with singing.

In the name of Your beloved Son Jesus I pray, AMEN.

Daily Prayer - A pure heart

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

One of my deepest desires is to have a "pure heart".  Not surprisingly then, a favourite scripture of mine is Psalm 51:10-12
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

The Pharisees were not happy men. They had furrowed brows, nervous tension, frustration. They were full of resentments, bitterness, prejudices, and hatreds. Why? Simply because they had lost sight of God's conception of the pure in heart. They thought that as long as they kept the letter of the law that was enough. But this was not God's plan. This did not produce purity of heart. This did not bring about happiness of soul. Jesus taught that God looks deeper than the outside actions of an individual. He searches and ponders the heart. God judges not so much the outside as He does the inside. He looks to the motives, thoughts, and intents of your heart. (Billy Graham's Daily Devotional, March 22, 2012)

Do you crave a pure heart?

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours!
Bruce

Create in me a pure heart, O my God,

And renew a tranquil conscience within me, O my Hope!

Through the spirit of power confirm Thou me in Thy Cause, O my Best-Beloved,
And by the light of Thy glory reveal unto me Thy path, O Thou the Goal of my desire!

Through the power of Thy transcendent might Lift me up unto the heaven of Thy holiness, O Source of my being,
And by the breezes of Thine eternity gladden me, O Thou Who art my God!

Let Thine everlasting melodies breathe tranquillity on me, O my Companion,
And let the riches of Thine ancient countenance Deliver me from all except Thee, O my Master,

And let the tidings of the revelation of Thine Incorruptible Essence bring me joy,
O Thou Who art the most manifest of the manifest And the most hidden of the hidden!

Daily Prayer - to whom would we go?

Good Wednesday morning, my friends.

Shortly after I became a Christ follower I remember a morning where I was in my bathroom shaving and just thinking to myself that I wished I could know for certain that all of "this" (the Gospel, Jesus, God) was real and true.  And then I heard a voice say to me "And what if it's not?  Do you want to go back to the way you were?".  My reaction was an immediate (and out loud) "NO!".
"You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.

Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:67-68)

To whom, indeed.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
Bruce

Father, there is no one nor anything that deserves our complete allegiance, but You, our Lord, who holds the words of eternal life.

Though others may refuse to listen or turn away from the message of salvation we choose to persevere, for to Whom else could we turn?

We persevere in trial and in victory, in the ups and downs and in the in-betweens of everyday circumstances.

We seek to do Your will in all things so that we will be richly rewarded at the end of this life.

Daily Prayer - Weary and burdened?

Good Tuesday morning, my friends.

Are you feeling frustrated that your spiritual life isn't all that you think it should be?  Are you concerned that you need to be doing "more" - more Bible reading, more praying, more studies, more church, more "religion"?  Do you sometimes think you should be further along your "spiritual path"?

Jesus said "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28).  I believe that the burden He spoke of was religion.  That is what weighs us down.

If we want to see more of the "fruit of the Holy Spirit" (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control - Galatians 5:22-23) ripen in our lives we have to allow God's sunshine to work on us.  This is only accomplished by resting in our relationship with Him.  Nothing to do with "religion" can help in this regard.

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours,
Bruce

Most Precious Lord Jesus…
Gentle And Wonderful God…
Truly Awesome And Ever-present Holy Spirit…

In your arms I find comfort and rest from the pain of my life.
Thank you for this time of reflection and meditation.
Thank you for these moments I spend basking in your comforting love and restful truth.

I love you Lord.

I need you this day to give me your comfort and rest so I can move out and move onward to serve you.
According to your will, may I always be able to give your comfort and rest to others.

During the coming days take my burdens and replace them with your Light.
During the coming days give me a break from the unending woes and afflictions trying to take me down.
During the coming days please give me your comfort so I can find new strength, new wisdom, new power to be your child.

In your presence, may I always find your comforting and restful peace as I have always found your comfort and rest in days gone by.

As you bless me with your comfort and rest, help me be a better person of faith.
As you bless me with your comfort and rest, touch the lives and hearts of everyone I pray for each day.

If you must make a choice between touching others with your comfort and rest or touching me, let others be touched first.

All these things I humbly pray in the name of my most Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, my Mighty God, and my Ever-present Holy Spirit upon whom I can rely.

Amen

Daily Prayer - Undeserved kindness

Good Friday morning, my friends.

I read this a few minutes ago:
We have a great high priest, who has gone into heaven, and he is Jesus the Son of God. That is why we must hold on to what we have said about him. Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help. (Hebrews 4:14-16 CEV)
I don't know about you, but that really gives me comfort and peace.  I could feel my shoulders relax as I considered the (absolutely) "undeserved kindness" that is extended to me.  I pray God will give you the same comfort and peace as you read those words.

Grace and comfort and peace be yours!
Bruce

Lord Jesus Christ, King of Kings,
You have power over life and death.

You know what is secret and hidden,
and neither our thoughts nor our
feelings are concealed from You.

Cure me of duplicity; I have done
evil before You. Now my life declines
from day to day and my sins increase.

O Lord, God of souls and bodies,
You know the extreme frailty of
my soul and my flesh.

Grant me strength in my weakness,
O Lord, and sustain me in my misery.

Give me a grateful soul that
I may never cease to recall Your benefits,
O Lord most bountiful. Be not mindful of my many sins,
but forgive me all my misdeeds.

O Lord, disdain not my prayer -
the prayer of a wretched sinner;
sustain me with Your grace until the end,
that it may protect me as in the past.

It is Your grace which has taught me wisdom;
blessed are they who follow her ways,
for they shall receive the crown of glory.

In spite of my unworthiness,
I praise You and I glorify You, O Lord,
for Your mercy to me is without limit.

You have been my help and my protection.
May the name of Your majesty be praised forever.

To you, our God, be glory.

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Forgiveness

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

The longer we are in "the Church" the easier it is to forget just how much Christ has done for us, how much He has forgiven us.  We can slip into the "us vs. them" mode - the "saved vs. unsaved".  We must remember that we too are still sinners.  Yes, redeemed sinners, but still sinners none the less.  Recently I listened to a sermon by Andy Stanley where he said something to the effect "the more I realize how much work God has yet to do in me, the less I tend to judge others".

The prayer below gives us perspective on our own continuing need for a Saviour.  It seems to be based on Psalm 40 which I see in many ways as a reflection of my own life.  Take the time today to reflect on all of the things God has done for you and then take fresh look at the "unsaved" around you.

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours today,
Bruce

Father, I lay my sins on Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God.

Thank You for bearing them all and freeing me from the accuser's condemnation.

I confess my sins to You, the big and small, so that my crimson stains are washed white in the blood of the sinless Lamb of God.

Thank You for being the Sinbearer that lifts me from the slimy pit of mud and mire that blocks the flowing of Your Spirit within me.

You are faithful and just; You forgive me of my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness as I seek Your forgiveness.

You put a new song in my mouth and a hymn of praise and thanksgiving for Your wondrous love and forgiveness.

Thank You in Jesus' name. Amen.

Daily Prayer - An Irish Blessing

Good Monday morning, my friends.

Yes, I know that St. Patrick's Day has past, but I couldn't help sending you this beautiful Irish prayer.  I pray it for each of you this morning and perhaps you can "pay it forward".  Send it on to someone special to you and tell them you have prayed it for them.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

May the blessing of light be upon you, light on the outside and light on the inside. With God's sunlight shining on you, may your heart glow with warmth like a turf fire that welcomes friends and strangers alike.

May the light of the Lord shine from your eyes like a candle in the window, welcoming the weary traveler.

May the blessing of God's soft rain be on you, falling gently on your head, refreshing your soul with the sweetness of little flowers newly blooming.

May the strength of the winds of Heaven bless you, carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean, sparkling after, in the sunlight.

May the blessing of God's earth be on you and as you walk the roads, may you always have a kind word for those you meet.

May you understand the strength and power of God in a thunderstorm in winter, the quiet beauty of creation and the calm of a summer sunset.

And may you come to realize that insignificant as you may seem in this great universe, you are an important part of God's plan.

May He watch over you and keep you safe from harm.

Daily Prayer - Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Good Friday morning, my friends.

Top o' the mornin' to ya!  Tomorrow is March 17th - St. Patrick's Day.  In honour of my wonderful mother, Elva (nee McKenna), and her pure Irish heritage, I give you "St. Patrick's Breastplate Prayer".  It is attributed to Ireland's most beloved patron saint and according to tradition St. Patrick wrote it in 433 A.D. for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leoghaire and his subjects from paganism to Christianity.

The prayer/poem is beautiful and flowing, offering praise and requesting protection.  Let our Lord lift your heart as you sing this to him today.

Bail ó Dhia ort (The blessing of God on you),
Bruce

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this day to me for ever.
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in the Jordan river;
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the day of doom;
*
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of the cherubim;
The sweet 'well done' in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,
The Patriarchs' prayers, the Prophets' scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord,
And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the starlit heaven,
The glorious sun's life-giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea,
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward,
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility,
I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart's idolatry,
Against the wizard's evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave and the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Daily Prayer - Glorious blessings!

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

Today I borrow a prayer from Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus.  When I read it this morning I was reminded of all of you, and I pray it for you.  I pray glorious blessings for you and your families.

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours,
Bruce

I have heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God's people. So I never stop being grateful for you, as I mention you in my prayers.

I ask the glorious Father and God of our Lord Jesus Christ to give you his Spirit.
The Spirit will make you wise and let you understand what it means to know God.
My prayer is that light will flood your hearts and that you will understand the hope that was given to you when God chose you.
Then you will discover the glorious blessings that will be yours together with all of God's people.

(Ephesians 1:15-18)

Daily Prayer - By this they will know ...

Good Wednesday morning, my friends.

In John 12:35 Jesus says "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another".  Selfishness can sometimes get in the way of our living this out.  Ask God today to help you see the needs all around you.

Grace and peace are yours in abundance,
Bruce

Father, You are well-acquainted with my weaknesses and the condition of my heart.

You know that I am often more concerned about my own comfort and my daily schedule than the needs of those around me.

I know I can't save the whole world, but I can listen to Your still small voice as You place individuals upon my heart.

Show me ways that I can make a difference.

May the character of my life reflect the heart of Christ as I reach out to others in love and in obedience to Your calling upon my life.

In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Daily Prayer - Suffering

Good Monday morning, my friends.

I am overwhelmed by your prayers and messages.  I cannot thank you enough, but I praise God for the wonderful community He has built around me.  For the longest time I thought this ministry was about God doing something for you through me.  Little did I know that He was doing something for me through you!

After several days rest I am feeling a lot better today than last week.  The symptoms, however, have not completely left, so there may be more tough days ahead.  I trust that God still has a great plan for me and will take care of me and my family.

I am reminded that others here have their own trials they endure on a daily basis.  Today I want to offer up a prayer to those of you who are suffering in any way.  If that is you, please allow the rest of us to take your plight to the Throne Room of God today.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Bruce

Jesus, I pray for people with unrelenting pain in their bodies—those who no longer get any relief from physical therapy or medication.

I pray for people with emotional and mental diseases—who live in the cruel world of delusional thinking and sabotaging emotions… and I pray for their families and care-givers.

I pray for the unconscionable number of children in the world who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition… and for their parents who feel both shame and helplessness.

Lord, these and many more stories of great suffering I bring before you…

Daily Prayer

Good Thursday morning, my friends.

Two weeks ago playing pick-up hockey I tangled up with a friend of mine and we had a nasty crash into the boards.  As a result I suffered a mild concussion.  The symptoms had been waning until last night when they came back with a vengeance - balance and vision issues, problems concentrating, general weakness and nausea.  I am off work today and probably tomorrow.  I am not including a prayer today, just asking you to remember me in your own prayers.  I debated whether to do this, seeing it as selfish, but en the end I decided that this is what Christian community is about.  We must have the courage to ask each other for help when needed.  Christianity is not a solo sport - it is a team sport.  You guys are my team and I need you today.

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours,
Bruce

Daily Prayer - Fulfilment in our work

Good Wednesday morning, my friends.

The prayer below strikes home for me as I face some "challenges" in my current workplace.  Seeing all of our work as working for God and not for our boss/company/pay changes our perspective.  This applies of course to whatever work we do around the home as well and any volunteering activities in which we are engaged.

How is your perspective on work these days?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
Bruce

Father, we find pleasure and fulfillment in our work when we work at it heartily, as for You, primarily.

We thank You for giving us the wherewithal to provide an income for our family where our financial needs are met.

Certainly each workplace has its challenges, but as we look to You for strength, endurance and wisdom to deal with those challenges we find joy, thanksgiving, and fulfillment in our work.

May others see heaven sent joy flow from our lives as we spread mutual respect and a strong work ethic in the workplace.

In the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen.

Daily Prayer - Do not give up, for your work will be rewarded

Good Tuesday morning, my friends.

We all get frustrated sometimes, even often, as our efforts to share the Gospel with those around us seem to fall on deaf ears.   Praying for friends and family appears to have no effect.  Even trying to love on people sometimes blows up in our face.  Do not get discouraged or think your efforts are in vain.  God see all, and uses all.  We may never see the results but that does not mean they aren't there.  Trust that God will act in His time and rest in His love.

Want some scripture to back that up?  Try these on for size:
2 Chronicles 15:7 "But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."

Luke 18:1-4 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "

1 Thes. 5:17 "Pray without ceasing"

Matt 7:7-9 "Ask and it will be given to you;" He said, "Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."

Luke 11:8 "I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence."

Job 11:18 "You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety."

Ps 62:5 "Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him."

Prov 23:18 "There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off."

Ecc 9:4 "Anyone who is among the living has hope —even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!"

Rom 4:18 "Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations."

Rom 5:3-5 "Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."

Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
Bruce

Lord, help me to see the ways I can influence and encourage those around me;
remind me that even when I feel insignificant,
you can use me in the lives of others and for your kingdom.

Daily Prayer - How God Sees You

Good Monday morning, my friends.

I think that too often we believe the lies of the enemy about our value in this world.  We hear the criticisms and complaints of others and take them to heart.  But God has a different view of you and of me and we need to reflect on that.  Seeing ourselves as God sees us makes us feel safe and at peace, and makes us more productive in His kingdom.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
Bruce

Most Precious Lord Jesus, Gentle And Wonderful God, Truly Awesome And Ever-present Holy Spirit, Precious Lord Jesus, I love You.
Too often I look at others to find my value in their eyes.
In truth, I know they cannot know me as You know me.

Whenever I am full of doubt, misgivings, and feel inferior, I need to see me as You see me.
Whenever I feel like I do not count, show me how much I count in Your Eyes.
Whenever I feel like I do not belong, help me see how much I belong to You.
Whenever I feel inferior, show me how You fully love me.
Whenever I feel like I am nothing, show me the wonders of Your creation and help me see how I am Your most wondrous creation of all.

Help my spirit rise into Your heavenly realms.
Let the joy of my salvation overtake all the sadness and grief I could ever feel.
I praise Your Name for all You are, all You have done, and for the home You have built for me in Heaven above.
All these things I humbly pray in the Name of my most Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, my Mighty God, and my Ever-present Holy Spirit upon Whom I can rely.

Amen.

Daily Prayer - Peace

Good Friday afternoon, my friends.

You may or may not be feeling peace in your heart today.  But as you lift this prayer allow God to fill you with His peace.  A peace that surpasses all understanding.

Amazing Grace and Eternal Peace be yours,
Bruce

Father,

You sustain me by speaking peace to my heart even in the midst of troubling circumstances.

Your unsurpassed peace cannot be defined by the absence of conflict but by the assurance that You will come alongside me in the midst of my conflict and make a roadway for me in the wilderness of my suffering.

When I seek You I can be assured that You will hear me and deliver me from all my fears.

Thank You for Your sustaining presence that lifts me from my slumber and helps me to trust You for another day.

Amen.
